Time Well Spent

I think we can all agree: these are the most difficult economic times we have experienced – as a nation and as individuals – in a long time. I hear it everywhere I go. Whether itʼs a business discussion with another CEO or a personal conversation with the people I work with, people are struggling just to get by.

Everyone is focused on the far-reaching consequences of questionable mortgage lending, failing automotive giants and tanking 401Ks. Understandably so. But long before the economic pressure reached its current boiling point, there were those already fighting to survive. People living in challenging circumstances. Children faced with life and death situations. Crime raging out of control.

Who is in a position to help? There are caps on budgets, impending layoffs and bills to pay.

I wrestle with it, too. As a company, Iverify has an obligation to perform: to hire and nurture good talent; to protect our customers; to deliver a return for our investors. But the fabric of this company has to be made of more than that. I need it to be more than that.

The time has come to shift our attention from the economy to humanity. If we canʼt give of our money, letʼs donate our time. Together, we can make an impact with selfless acts of service. From reading with children in local schools to working with the homeless at shelters to visiting the elderly, there are countless ways to touch the lives of others. People need to feel valued, appreciated and supported – especially in challenging times. Itʼs what will see this country through and make us stronger on the other side.

Iverify is doing it. We are actively engaged in choosing a direction that we can unite around and to devote our energy. One program under consideration is called Communities In Schools, an organization that connects community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. My challenge to business owners is to identify ways in which your company can give back, too. Iʼm not talking about writing a check or hosting a fundraiser. I mean inspire your employees to give of their time, their hope and their energy – and then let them take time out of the work day to help others. Yes, on your clock. Mentor a child, help build affordable housing, tutor someone going for their G.E.D. The benefit: helping strengthen the lives and communities of others who arenʼt as lucky. Your employees will also feel great about themselves. And it doesnʼt cost a thing!

Stay tuned to find out more about our experience with giving back. And if you want to talk more about your thoughts on community involvement, give me a call or send me an email. I will always make time to talk about this subject.
