Asserting a Lofty Aspiration

Thursday, 15 Jan 2009, 9:09am

The reason I’m starting this blog is because, as a veteran of law enforcement and the security industry, I needed a place to put down my thoughts on the effects of what I see happening every day in the world. For me, finding a topic I’m passionate about was simple: too many kids are involved in violent crime. Every day, I witness incidents of kids robbing stores, kids shooting cops, kids killing kids.

Unfortunately, the solution is complex.

I know this isn’t a particularly palatable subject, but it’s something I feel very strongly about and it needs to be addressed. As I look around I see the American family is eroding. Our young people are finding themselves without social supports or positive role models. Our children are feeling hopeless and helpless as they look for any opportunity at all to give them a reason to believe in something better. But teens are increasingly turning to criminal behavior, endangering their lives and our communities.

We are a society that barely bats an eyelash at pumping three trillion dollars into our failing businesses – but we can’t figure out how to rescue our failing communities? I refuse to accept that and want this blog to serve as a public statement of my commitment and accountability to the cause. While I don’t have the answer just yet, it starts with me putting my thoughts down here.

Of course I will also write monthly posts about other issues in the security industry. It’s what I know best. But my primary goal is to eventually use this blog as a forum for collaborating with others on how to get involved early with today’s youth and how we can have a meaningful impact on the well-being of all of our children and our communities.

Fixing the problem may be a lofty aspiration, but I am no stranger to challenges. And this issue is far too important to me not to talk about it.
